Tips & Substitutions

For a spicier relish, consider adding a few jalapeños or substituting some of the green peppers with banana peppers. This relish can also be adapted with alternative sweeteners if you're looking for healthier options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use ripe tomatoes instead of green tomatoes?

It's best to stick with green tomatoes for this recipe as they provide the right tartness and texture. Ripe tomatoes will change the flavor profile, making the relish sweeter and less tangy. If you have a mix of both, you could experiment, but the traditional taste comes from using green tomatoes.

How long does the relish last once opened?

Once opened, the relish should be refrigerated and consumed within a month. Always use a clean utensil to scoop out the relish to maintain its freshness and prevent spoilage. Properly sealed jars can last for a year in a cool, dark place before opening.

Can I adjust the sweetness of the relish?

Yes, you can adjust the sugar to your taste. If you prefer a less sweet relish, start with 1 cup of sugar and taste the mixture before canning. You can also substitute with alternative sweeteners, but keep in mind that this might alter the texture and flavor slightly.
