- In a Dutch oven, bring beans, ham, and enough water to fill the pan three-quarters full to a boil.

- Cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until beans are tender, which may take from 1 to 3 hours.
- Add additional water as needed to prevent mixture from sticking to the pan.
