Ingredients

  • 5 slices onion
  • 5 dill heads
  • 5 garlic buds
  • 5 small pieces alum
  • 1 qt vinegar
  • 1 pt water
  • 1/2 c coarse salt
  • 2 1/2 c sugar

Instructions

  1. Slice cucumbers and place them in jars with 1 slice of onion, 1 dill head, 1 garlic bud, and a small piece of alum in each jar.
  2. Combine vinegar, water, coarse salt, and sugar in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
  3. Pour the hot brine over the cucumbers in the jars, ensuring they are fully submerged.
  4. Seal the jars and let them cool to room temperature before refrigerating.
  5. Allow the pickles to mature for at least a few days before serving for optimal flavor.
