Ingredients

  • 1 2/3 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups confectioners sugar
  • 3 teaspoons softened butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Trace your hand or child's hand on thin paper and cut out the pattern.
  3. Combine flour and sugar; mix well.
  4. Add cold butter pieces and mix until the mixture resembles cornmeal.
  5. Add egg and vanilla; mix until combined.
  6. Turn dough onto floured paper and press into a ball.
  7. Cut the dough into 8 wedges.
  8. Roll out each wedge to 1/4-inch thickness.
  9. Place the paper pattern over the rolled dough and cut out handprints.
  10. Transfer the cut-out cookies onto an ungreased cookie sheet.
  11. Bake until cookies are light brown, about 10 minutes.
  12. Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack.
  13. Decorate with icing as desired.
