Ingredients

  • 8-inch unbaked Crisco double pie crust
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups peeled and sliced tart apples
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F.
  2. Combine peeled and sliced tart apples, 1/4 cup sugar, and water in a large saucepan.
  3. Cook on medium heat until apples soften and become transparent.
  4. Drain apples, reserving both apples and 3/4 cup of liquid.
  5. In the same or another saucepan, combine 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla.
  6. Add the reserved 3/4 cup apple liquid to the mixture.
  7. Cook on medium heat until the mixture boils and thickens. Add butter and reserved apples.
  8. Stir until apples are coated with the filling.
  9. Spoon the filling into the unbaked pie crust.
  10. Moisten the pastry edge with water.
  11. Cover with the top crust.
  12. Fold the top edge under the bottom crust.
  13. Flute the edges with fingers.
  14. Cut slits or decorative designs in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  15. Cover the pie edges with foil to prevent over-browning.
  16. Bake at 425°F for 10 minutes.
  17. Reduce oven temperature to 350°F and bake for an additional 25 minutes or until crust is golden brown.
  18. Cool the pie to room temperature before serving.
