Ingredients

  • 5 to 6 cups flour
  • 2 packages instant dry yeast
  • 1 package Hidden Valley dressing (buttermilk flavor)
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup Crisco
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, yeast, and salad dressing mix; mix well.
  2. Heat buttermilk, water, and shortening until warm.
  3. Add the warm mixture to the flour mixture.
  4. Add the egg and blend well until moistened.
  5. Beat for 3 minutes on medium speed.
  6. Gradually stir in remaining flour until a firm dough forms.
  7. Knead until smooth, about 5 to 10 minutes, then place in a greased bowl.
  8. Cover and let rise in a warm oven.
  9. Turn oven to 200°F for 1 minute, then turn off and leave the dough to rise.
  10. Punch down the dough and divide into two parts.
  11. Roll each part into a 12 x 7-inch rectangle, then roll up, sealing edges and ends.
  12. Place seam side down on a cookie sheet.
  13. Make diagonal slits 2 inches apart on top of each loaf.
  14. Cover and let rise in a warm oven for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  15. Bake at 375°F for 25 to 30 minutes.
  16. Brush the loaves with melted butter and sprinkle with dressing mix.
