Ingredients

  • 1 loaf (16 oz.) white bread, unsliced
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon whole leaf dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon whole leaf dried marjoram

Instructions

  1. With a serrated edge knife, cut off the top, side, and end crusts of the bread, leaving the bottom crust intact.
  2. Cut the bread in half lengthwise and into 3/4-inch pieces crosswise, leaving the bottom attached.
  3. Cream the softened butter in a bowl.
  4. Add salt and Worcestershire sauce to the butter and mix well.
  5. Place thyme and marjoram leaves in the palm of your hand and crush lightly to release their oils.
  6. Add the crushed herbs to the butter and mix thoroughly.
  7. Spread all cut surfaces of the bread, inside and out, with the herb butter.
  8. Place the prepared bread on a rimmed baking sheet.
  9. Bake uncovered in a 325°F (160°C) oven for about 30 minutes, or until the bread is crisp.
  10. Serve hot.
