Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup mashed potatoes
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 6 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 packages yeast
  • 1 pint milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Mix the yeast with warm milk and let it activate until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine shortening, mashed potatoes, egg yolks, vanilla, sugar, and salt.
  3. Gradually add the flour and the activated yeast mixture, kneading until a smooth dough forms.
  4. Cover the dough and let it rise until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and roll it out to the desired thickness.
  6. Cut into donut shapes or desired forms.
  7. Deep fry in hot oil until golden brown on both sides.
  8. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels before serving.
