Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 cups sharp cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup shortening

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Sift together flour, cornmeal, sugar, salt, and baking powder.
  3. Add shredded cheese, milk, egg, and shortening; beat with a rotary beater about 1 minute or until smooth.
  4. Pour batter into a greased 8-inch square pan.
  5. Bake for 30 minutes.
  6. Cut into squares and serve while hot.
