Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • hot water

Instructions

  1. Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cocoa, and salt.
  2. Cream together shortening, sugar, and beaten eggs; then add 1 cup hot water and blend well.
  3. Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, blending thoroughly.
  4. Pour in the remaining 1 cup hot water and vanilla; mix on high for 2 minutes.
  5. Pour the batter into a greased and floured 9 x 13-inch pan.
  6. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes.
  7. Allow to cool slightly before frosting.
