Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider using butter instead of margarine. If you prefer a lighter version, you can substitute the German chocolate cake mix with a vanilla cake mix and add cocoa powder to taste. Ensure the caramels are fully melted and smooth to create an even layer. If you want to add a twist, try incorporating nuts or dried fruits for additional texture.

Serving Suggestions

Serve these indulgent Illini Bars at gatherings, parties, or as a delightful dessert after a meal. They pair beautifully with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. For a complete dessert experience, consider serving alongside a slice of Sweet Potato Scallop or a light salad for balance.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftover Illini Bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. For longer storage, refrigerate them for up to a week. To reheat, simply warm individual bars in the microwave for about 10-15 seconds to restore their gooey texture without overcooking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of cake mix?

Yes, you can experiment with different cake mixes, such as chocolate or yellow cake mix. Each will provide a unique flavor profile, but keep in mind that the texture may vary slightly. Adjust the baking time if needed, particularly if using a mix that requires different moisture levels.

How do I cut the bars cleanly?

To cut the bars cleanly, allow them to cool completely, then use a sharp knife dipped in hot water for clean cuts. Wipe the knife between cuts to maintain neat edges. This technique helps prevent sticking and ensures each bar looks presentable, especially if serving at an event.

Can I freeze Illini Bars?

Yes, Illini Bars freeze well. Wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and then in aluminum foil before placing them in an airtight container. They can be frozen for up to three months. To enjoy, simply thaw them in the refrigerator overnight before serving.
