Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb. ground pork or sausage meat
  • 1/2 lb. ground beef
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup fine bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup mashed potatoes
  • salt
  • pepper

Instructions

  1. Fry ground pork or sausage meat and chopped onion until the meat is no longer pink.
  2. Add the bread crumbs, mashed potatoes, salt, pepper, and thyme to the meat mixture and mix well.
  3. Open the package of Pillsbury crescent rolls and leave them for 30 minutes until workable.
  4. Use one-half of a crescent roll for each tourtière.
  5. Place a meat mixture the size of a golf ball on the dough and work it up around the meat to form a small pie.
  6. Bake in a 425°F oven for about 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown.

Tips & Substitutions

For added flavor, consider incorporating spices like nutmeg or allspice into the meat mixture. If you don’t have ground pork, ground turkey or chicken can be a lighter substitute. For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free breadcrumbs and crescent rolls. Letting the crescent dough rest is key to making it pliable for shaping your tourtières.

Serving Suggestions

These individual tourtières make a delightful appetizer or main dish. Pair them with a simple green salad or steamed vegetables for a balanced meal. A side of cranberry sauce or a tangy dipping sauce complements the savory flavors beautifully. For a heartier spread, consider serving alongside dishes like Holubtsi (Cabbage Rolls).

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftover tourtières in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place them in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 10-15 minutes until warmed through and crispy again. You can also freeze them before baking for up to 2 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I prepare the filling in advance?

Yes, you can prepare the filling a day ahead and store it in the refrigerator. Just make sure to let it cool before sealing it in an airtight container. When you're ready to assemble the tourtières, simply take it out and proceed with the recipe as instructed.

What can I use instead of crescent rolls?

If you don't have crescent rolls, you can use pie crust or puff pastry as a substitute. Roll out the dough to your desired thickness and cut it into squares or circles. This can give your tourtières a different texture, but they will still be delicious!

How can I make these vegetarian?

To create a vegetarian version, replace the meat with a mixture of mushrooms, lentils, and finely chopped vegetables. Season well to ensure the filling is flavorful. You can also incorporate ingredients like black beans or chickpeas to add protein and texture.
