Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup solid shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 cups honey
  • confectioners sugar
  • crushed walnuts or pecans

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, shortening, eggs, and baking powder in the given order.
  2. Add a little water, just enough to hold the dough together. If it gets too sticky, add a little more flour.
  3. Roll dough into a ball. Break off small pieces of dough and roll between floured hands into a long, pencil-like roll.
  4. Place on a board and cut into 1/2 inch pieces.
  5. Fry in hot oil until golden, frying a small amount at a time.
  6. Remove from hot oil with a slotted spoon and drain on brown paper until cooled.
  7. In a deep pan, heat honey.
  8. Drop in cooked dough balls and stir until coated.
  9. Lift out quickly and place on a large platter.
  10. Mound high in the center; sprinkle with confectioners sugar, crushed nuts, and colored sprinkles if desired.
