Joan's Chow-Chow is a tangy, spicy relish made from cabbage, green tomatoes, and hot peppers, perfect for adding zest to sandwiches, burgers, and cookouts.

Ingredients

  • 1 gallon chopped cabbage
  • 1.5 gallons chopped green tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup hot peppers
  • 1 quart chopped onions
  • 2 tablespoons salt
  • 4 tablespoons mustard seed
  • 2 pounds sugar

Instructions

  1. Soak cabbage and green tomatoes in salt overnight.
  2. Press out the salt water from the soaked vegetables.
  3. Mix vinegar, sugar, and mustard seed to create the brine.
  4. Combine the drained vegetables with the vinegar mixture and cook until done.
  5. Can the hot chow-chow in pint jars and seal.
