- Sift the Indian meal into a pan; make a hole in the middle and pour in warm water, adding salt.
- Mix the meal and water gradually into a soft dough using a spoon, stirring briskly for at least a quarter of an hour until light and spongy.
- Spread the dough smoothly and evenly on a straight, flat board or similar surface.
- Place the board nearly upright before an open fire and support it with an iron against the back.
- Bake the cake thoroughly until golden and cooked through.
- Cut the baked cake into squares and serve hot, split and buttered.
