Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 teaspoons soda
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup light molasses

Instructions

  1. Start heating oven to 350°F.
  2. Sift flour with salt, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, and baking soda.
  3. Cream shortening until light and fluffy, gradually add 1 cup sugar.
  4. Blend in egg and molasses, then stir in the flour mixture until well blended.
  5. Shape dough into 1 1/2-inch balls; roll in granulated sugar.
  6. Place 3 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  7. Flatten with the bottom of a glass dipped in sugar.
  8. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes.
  9. Let stand for a minute before removing from cookie sheets.
