Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water (105° to 115°F)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 quart warm sweet milk (105° to 115°F)
  • 1 1/2 cups cooking oil

Instructions

  1. In a large warm bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let stand until bubbly, about 5 to 10 minutes.
  2. Stir together several cups of the flour with the sugar and salt until well mixed.
  3. Add the flour mixture to the yeast mixture along with the slightly beaten eggs, oil, and warm milk.
  4. Beat to blend well.
  5. Gradually stir in more flour until the dough is soft and manageable, being careful not to add too much flour.
  6. Cover the bowl and let the batter rise in a warm place (about 85° to 90°F) until doubled in size, approximately 45 minutes.
  7. Roll out the dough and cut into rolls using a small grapefruit juice can or similar cutter.
  8. Place the rolls on a buttered cookie sheet and let rise again for another 45 minutes.
  9. Preheat the oven to 425°F.
  10. Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 10 to 17 minutes, or until lightly browned.
  11. Remove from the oven and serve warm or let cool. These rolls can be lightly browned and stored in the freezer.
