  • 1 whole bell pepper, chopped
  • 28 oz. can crushed tomatoes
  • 12 oz. can tomato paste
  • 3 Tbsp. Herbs de Provence
  • 3 Tbsp. crushed garlic
  • 1 Tbsp. paprika
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. pepper
  • 4 bay leaves
  • 2 lb. linguini

Instructions

  1. Place water on stove and cook linguini according to package instructions.
  2. In a large pot, combine crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, chopped onion, chopped bell pepper, herbs de Provence, crushed garlic, paprika, salt, pepper, and bay leaves. Simmer for 30 minutes.
  3. While the sauce simmers, clean mussels according to package directions.
  4. Add mussels to the sauce and cook for another 15 to 20 minutes until the mussel shells open.
  5. Serve the sauce and mussels over the cooked linguini.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider adding a splash of white wine to the sauce while it simmers. If mussels are unavailable, shrimp can be a great substitute. To save time, prep all ingredients beforehand, and use pre-chopped vegetables. For a spicier kick, add red pepper flakes to the sauce. This dish is reminiscent of my favorite pasta dishes, so feel free to experiment.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the Land and Sea Linguini with a fresh side salad and crusty garlic bread for a complete meal. For added flavor, sprinkle freshly grated Parmesan cheese on top before serving. This dish pairs beautifully with a crisp white wine or a light beer. For more seafood inspiration, check out my collection of seafood recipes.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop over low heat, adding a splash of water or broth to loosen the sauce. Avoid microwaving, as it may overcook the mussels and linguini. When reheating, ensure the mussels are heated through but not overcooked.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I use instead of kielbasa in this recipe?

You can substitute kielbasa with other smoked sausages or even chorizo for a different flavor profile. If you're looking for a lighter option, consider using turkey sausage or omit the sausage entirely for a vegetarian version. Adjust cooking time as needed for different ingredients.

How do I know when the mussels are cooked properly?

Mussels are done cooking when their shells have opened. Discard any mussels that remain closed after cooking, as they are not safe to eat. Make sure to monitor them closely during the last few minutes of cooking to avoid overcooking.

Can I make this dish ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the sauce ahead of time, store it in the refrigerator, and cook the linguini just before serving. However, it’s best to add the mussels just before serving to ensure they remain tender and fresh. This approach makes it easier to serve a delicious meal without last-minute stress.
