Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine sugar, brown sugar, and shortening until creamy.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla, and beat well.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until well combined.
  6. If doubling the recipe, use 1/2 cup shortening and 1/2 cup butter as noted.
  7. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  8. Cut into desired shapes and place on a baking sheet.
  9. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until edges are lightly golden.
  10. Cool on wire racks before serving.
