Ingredients

  • 3 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 stick butter
  • nuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Bring to a rolling boil, stirring constantly, sugar, milk, salt, and cocoa.
  2. Cook to 235°F (soft-ball stage).
  3. Remove from heat; add vanilla and butter, but do not stir.
  4. Cool to 110°F (warm but not hot).
  5. Add nuts if desired. Beat with a wooden spoon until the mixture loses its gloss.
  6. Pour into a greased 9 x 9-inch pan immediately.
