Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 cup raisins
  • Lemon glaze (recipe follows)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups flour, sugar, active dry yeast, and salt.
  2. Heat milk, butter, and water until very warm; butter does not need to melt.
  3. Gradually add the warm mixture to the dry ingredients, beating 2 minutes at medium speed of an electric mixer, scraping the bowl occasionally.
  4. Add egg yolks and 1/2 cup of the remaining flour.
  5. Beat 2 minutes at high speed.
  6. Stir in the remaining flour with a spoon. Cover the bowl.
  7. Let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour or more.
