Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb. shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/4 cups sifted flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts
  • grated peel of 1 lemon

Instructions

  1. Cream together the shortening and sugar; mix the eggs into the mixture.
  2. Sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside on wax paper.
  3. Add the sifted dry ingredients alternately with the milk to the creamed mixture, mixing completely after each addition.
  4. Stir in the chopped nuts and grated lemon peel, blending well.
  5. Pour the batter into a buttered bread pan.
  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 1 hour.
  7. After baking, mix the juice of one lemon over the top of the loaf.
  8. Let stand a few minutes, then remove from the pan and cool.
  9. Slice when cool and serve.
