Ingredients

  • 4 cups water
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 2 cups flour, sifted
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • dash of pepper

Instructions

  1. Bring 4 cups of water, lemon slices, sugar, and molasses to a boil.
  2. Meanwhile, prepare the dumpling batter by mixing sifted flour, salt, shortening, baking powder, milk, and a dash of pepper until well combined.
  3. Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the simmering liquid.
  4. Cook until the dumplings are done, approximately 3 minutes for small ones, turning once during cooking.
  5. Remove the dumplings from the liquid.
  6. Thicken the remaining liquid slightly with flour and pour over the dumplings before serving.
