Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 5 egg yolks
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 5 egg whites

Instructions

  1. Mix shortening, softened butter, and sugar until well combined.
  2. Add egg yolks one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  3. Sift together flour, soda, and salt; gradually add to the creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour.
  4. Stir in vanilla extract.
  5. Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form and gently fold into the batter.
  6. Spoon the batter into two prepared 9-inch cake pans.
  7. Bake at 350°F for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center tests done.
  8. Allow cakes to cool before frosting.
