Ingredients

  • 2 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1 3/4 cups warm water (105-115°F)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 egg, slightly beaten
  • 2 1/4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 1/4 to 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water in a large mixing bowl; add sugar and salt to the yeast mixture.
  2. Melt 1/4 cup butter; cool to lukewarm.
  3. Add melted butter, egg, and whole wheat flour to the yeast mixture, stirring well.
  4. Gradually stir in enough all-purpose flour to make a soft dough.
  5. Turn dough out onto a well-floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic (about 5 minutes).
  6. Place in a well-greased bowl, turning to grease the top.
  7. Cover and let rise in a warm place (85°F), free from drafts, for 1 hour or until doubled in bulk.
