Lye Soup is a traditional, robust dish featuring a unique blend of lye and grease, suited for adventurous cooks interested in bold flavors and unconventional recipes.

Ingredients

  • 1 can Merry War lye
  • 1 qt. cold water
  • 5 lb. lard or grease
  • 4 Tbsp. Borax
  • 1/2 cup household ammonia

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the Borax in 1 cup hot water and stir well.
  2. Dissolve the lye in cold water.
  3. Add the grease or lard to the dissolved Borax and lye mixture.
  4. Pour the mixture into a granite flat pan.
  5. Let the mixture cool completely.
  6. Cut into squares before serving.
