Ingredients

  • 6 to 6 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 cup butter-flavor Crisco
  • 1 egg
  • 2 packages dry yeast

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine 2 1/4 cups flour, salt, sugar, yeast, and Crisco.
  2. On low speed of the mixer, add 2 cups of hot water (120° to 130°) and the egg.
  3. Beat at medium speed for 3 minutes.
  4. With the mixer, beat in 1 or 2 cups of additional flour.
  5. If using dough hooks, change to them to add the remainder of the flour to make a smooth dough.
  6. If mixing by hand, add the remainder of the flour with a wooden spoon.
  7. Turn onto a floured surface and knead into a smooth and elastic dough.
  8. Shape into a ball and place into a large greased bowl.
  9. Cover and set in a warm place to rise for about two hours.
  10. Punch down the dough.
  11. Cover tightly and refrigerate overnight or for at least 6 hours.
