Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoon shortening
  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 cups flour
  • 4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Cream sugar, shortening, and eggs together until well blended.
  2. Add dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, salt, nutmeg) alternately with milk, mixing until smooth.
  3. Chill the dough for about 1 hour.
  4. Take about half of the chilled dough at a time, roll on a floured surface to 1/4-inch thickness.
  5. Cut into doughnut shapes with a cutter.
  6. Fry in 375°F (190°C) deep fat for about 1 minute, turning once until golden brown.
  7. Remove with a long-handled fork and drain on paper towels.
  8. Optional: Add 1 grated apple to the dough for moist, flavorful doughnuts.
