Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup light molasses
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon mace

Instructions

  1. Cream shortening, sugar, and molasses; then add the egg yolk.
  2. Mix well.
  3. Sift flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, ground cloves, allspice, cinnamon, and mace.
  4. Sift the dry ingredients into the creamed mixture and mix well.
  5. Wrap the dough in foil and chill.
  6. Roll a small portion of the dough at a time to 1/8-inch thickness, keeping remaining dough chilled until ready to roll out.
  7. Cut out cookies with round or flower-shaped cutters.
  8. Place on ungreased baking sheets.
  9. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 8 to 10 minutes.
  10. Cool the cookies.
  11. Decorate with cake decorator, frosting, or frosting in a pressure can.
