- Mix sugar, water, and salt in the top of a double boiler.
- Boil over medium heat until a thick syrup forms, about 5 minutes.
- Mix 1/2 cup of cold milk with cornstarch to make a thin paste.
- Add 1 3/4 cups of milk to the paste, combine with hot syrup, and cook over hot water until thick and smooth.
- Continue cooking for 15 minutes longer, stirring constantly.
- Gradually stir a small amount of the hot mixture into the beaten egg yolks, then add the egg mixture back into the hot mixture and cook a few minutes longer.
- Add butter and vanilla to the mixture.
- Pour the filling into a 9-inch pie shell.
- Top with meringue and brown.
