Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 2 egg whites

Instructions

  1. Mix together shortening, brown sugar, white sugar, egg yolks with baking soda, water, flour, and vanilla until well combined.
  2. Press the batter into the bottom of a greased 9 x 13-inch pan.
  3. Sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the batter.
  4. Beat egg whites until soft peaks form, then gradually add 1 cup brown sugar and beat until stiff peaks form to make meringue.
  5. Spread the meringue over the chocolate chips in the pan.
  6. Sprinkle sliced almonds on top.
  7. Bake at 350°F for 25 minutes until golden and cooked through.
