Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Sift all ingredients together in a large bowl.
  2. Blend in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Add the milk and egg one at a time, stirring gently after each addition.
  4. Stir to combine the ingredients into a soft dough.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a floured board and knead lightly.
  6. Roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness and cut into biscuits.
  7. Place the biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet and bake at 375°F until light brown, about 15 minutes.
