Ingredients

  • 3 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 5 cups self-rising flour, unsifted
  • 2 cups lukewarm buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 7 teaspoons soda
  • 1 cup shortening

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water; set aside.
  2. Mix self-rising flour, sugar, and soda in a large bowl.
  3. Cut in shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Add the dissolved yeast and lukewarm buttermilk; mix until a soft dough forms.
  5. Place the desired amount of dough on a floured cloth.
  6. Pat out the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness.
  7. Cut the dough with a biscuit cutter into round shapes.
  8. Let the cut dough rise in a warm place until about doubled in size, approximately 1 hour.
  9. Bake the rolls at 350°F (175°C) for 10 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Place any remaining dough in the refrigerator for future use.
