- Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water; set aside.
- Mix self-rising flour, sugar, and soda in a large bowl.
- Cut in shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add the dissolved yeast and lukewarm buttermilk; mix until a soft dough forms.
- Place the desired amount of dough on a floured cloth.
- Pat out the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness.
- Cut the dough with a biscuit cutter into round shapes.
- Let the cut dough rise in a warm place until about doubled in size, approximately 1 hour.
- Bake the rolls at 350°F (175°C) for 10 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
- Place any remaining dough in the refrigerator for future use.
