Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda

Instructions

  1. Cream the shortening with sugar, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger.
  2. Add the beaten egg and molasses to the creamed mixture.
  3. Sift the flour with baking soda.
  4. Mix the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until well combined.
  5. Form the dough into small balls about 1 teaspoon each and roll in sugar.
  6. Place the balls on an ungreased cookie sheet and press with a sugared glass to flatten.
  7. Bake at 300°F (150°C) for 8 to 10 minutes until cookies rise and then flatten out.
