Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • approximately 5 cups plain flour
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 package yeast

Instructions

  1. Mix salt and 4 1/2 cups of flour.
  2. Cut in the flour and shortening until crumbly.
  3. Mix the flour mixture with the dissolved yeast and other ingredients.
  4. Knead in an additional 1/2 cup flour (or more if needed) into the dough.
  5. Let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough.
  7. Divide the dough and shape into rolls, placing them in pans.
  8. Let the rolls rise again until puffy.
  9. Bake at 400°F for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
