- Cream shortening and sugar together until light and fluffy.
- In a separate bowl, mix flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and baking soda.
- Using fingers, blend dry ingredients into the creamed mixture until crumbly; set aside half for topping.
- Combine sour milk with the remaining mixture and stir until well blended.
- Pour batter into a greased and floured 8 x 8-inch baking pan.
- Sprinkle the reserved crumb mixture on top.
- Bake at 325°F (160°C) for 40 to 50 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
