Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 cup sour milk

Instructions

  1. Cream shortening and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and baking soda.
  3. Using fingers, blend dry ingredients into the creamed mixture until crumbly; set aside half for topping.
  4. Combine sour milk with the remaining mixture and stir until well blended.
  5. Pour batter into a greased and floured 8 x 8-inch baking pan.
  6. Sprinkle the reserved crumb mixture on top.
  7. Bake at 325°F (160°C) for 40 to 50 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
