Ingredients

  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 2 cups light corn syrup
  • dash of salt
  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 2 cups evaporated milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup coarsely chopped nuts (black walnuts, English walnuts, or pecans)

Instructions

  1. Blend sugar, corn syrup, and salt with a wooden spoon.
  2. Boil the mixture for at least 10 minutes, stirring well.
  3. Add margarine (butter).
  4. Slowly stir in evaporated milk and continue stirring.
  5. Cook at medium heat, being careful as it may bubble and pop; remove from heat if necessary until all milk is added.
  6. Stir constantly and cook until a firm ball forms in cold water, at 245°F on a candy thermometer.
  7. Remove from heat.
  8. Add vanilla.
  9. Use an electric mixer to beat the mixture for a couple of minutes.
  10. Add chopped nuts.
  11. Pour into a greased 9 x 13-inch pan.
  12. Cool completely.
  13. Cut into squares.
  14. Wrap each piece individually.
