Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 6 ounces chocolate bits
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 cup sifted flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Combine sugar, shortening, and water in a saucepan and bring just to a boil, stirring constantly.
  2. Remove from heat and add chocolate bits and vanilla, stirring until the chocolate melts.
  3. Beat in eggs, one at a time.
  4. Sift together the flour, salt, soda, and baking powder. Add chopped nuts to the dry mixture.
  5. Spread the batter in a greased 9-inch square pan.
  6. Bake at 325°F (163°C) for 25 minutes.
