Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sour milk or buttermilk
  • 4 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

Instructions

  1. Cream together sugar, shortening, and eggs.
  2. Add vanilla.
  3. Alternate adding sour milk (or buttermilk) and dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, salt, baking soda) to the mixture.
  4. Pat dough out on a floured surface to 1/2-inch thickness.
  5. Cut with a large cookie cutter or glass.
  6. Bake at 375°F for 10 to 12 minutes, until slightly brown on the bottom.
