Onion Turnovers

Golden onion turnovers feature sautéed sweet Spanish onions and Parmesan cheese encased in flaky pastry, perfect as appetizers or snacks for gatherings and flavorful bites.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup oil or margarine
  • 2 sweet Spanish onions, sliced
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry basil
  • 1/2 cup water
  • pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, sift flour and 1 teaspoon salt.
  2. Cut in 3 tablespoons oil and gradually add the water, mixing thoroughly.
  3. Add a little flour if necessary until the dough does not stick to the bowl. Set aside.
  4. Heat 1/4 cup oil in a frying pan and sauté sliced onions until golden.
  5. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Roll the dough on a lightly floured board to 1/8-inch thickness.
  7. Cut the dough into 4-inch squares.
  8. Place 1 tablespoon of sautéed onions and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese in the center of each square.
  9. Moisten the edges of the pastry, fold opposite corners together to form a triangle, and press the edges to seal.
