Ingredients

  • 1 large orange
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

Instructions

  1. Grease a large cookie sheet.
  2. Grate the peel from the orange and set aside.
  3. Squeeze 1/4 cup of juice from the orange.
  4. In a heavy 2-quart saucepan with a candy thermometer, combine orange juice, sugar, corn syrup, and salt over medium heat.
  5. Bring mixture to a boil and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves.
  6. Continue cooking until the temperature reaches 300°F (hard-crack stage).
  7. Remove from heat and immediately stir in the orange peel, butter or margarine, and baking soda.
  8. Pour the mixture onto the prepared cookie sheet at once.
  9. Use two forks to lift and pull the mixture into a rectangle approximately 14 x 12 inches.
  10. Allow to cool completely before breaking into pieces.
