Ingredients

  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 5 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup cold coffee
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 cup candied orange peel

Instructions

  1. Combine molasses, sugar, and egg in a mixing bowl.
  2. Sift flour and baking powder together in a separate bowl.
  3. Dissolve baking soda in cold coffee.
  4. Add the flour mixture and coffee mixture alternately to the molasses mixture, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Fold in the candied orange peel.
  6. Pour the batter into a greased and floured 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 1 1/2 hours or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
