Ingredients

  • 5 lb. flour
  • 2 Tbsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 4 Tbsp. shortening
  • 2 oz. yeast
  • 6 c. warm water

Instructions

  1. Add salt and sugar to the flour and mix well.
  2. Cut the shortening into the dry ingredients until evenly distributed.
  3. Dissolve the yeast in 4 cups of warm water.
  4. Add 2 more cups of warm water as needed to form a soft dough.
  5. Mix the ingredients well with your hands.
  6. Knead the dough on a hard surface until smooth and well worked together.
  7. Grease the top of the dough in the bowl.
  8. Let the dough rise until it doubles in size.
  9. Punch down the dough.
  10. Let it rise again until nearly doubled.
  11. Divide the dough and put it into pans.
  12. Let the dough in pans rise until it reaches the top of the pans.
  13. Bake at 350°F until the bread is golden brown.
