- Pick any foreign objects from the beans.
- Wash the beans and place them in a 2 1/2-quart utensil with a cover.
- Cover the beans about 1/4 inch above the beans with cold water.
- Bring the water to a full boil for approximately 1 minute, then drain off the hot water through a colander.
- Cover the beans again with hot water about 1/4 inch above the bean level.
- Add salt and canola oil to the beans.
- Cook until the beans are tender, stirring occasionally.
- Add more hot water if necessary during cooking.
- When the beans are tender and well done, add sugar or molasses, preferably molasses.
- Add more hot water if soupy beans are desired.
