Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 3/4 cup dark brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 pound sweet butter, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 large eggs
  • 12 ounces chocolate chunks
  • 1/2 to 1 cup nuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Mix flour, baking soda, and salt in a bowl and set aside.
  3. Use a mixer to briefly mix white sugar and dark brown sugar at low speed.
  4. Add butter at low speed, then high; beat until pale, light, and very fluffy.
  5. Add vanilla at low speed, then high for a few seconds.
  6. Add eggs at low speed, then high until the mixture looks creamed.
  7. Add flour, baking soda, and salt mixture, 1/2 cup at a time, at low speed for 1 minute, then high speed for a few seconds.
  8. Scrape the bowl down on the sides; add chocolate chunks and nuts.
  9. Mix at low speed for approximately 10 seconds.
  10. Drop tablespoon-sized portions of dough onto a double-thickness ungreased cookie sheet.
  11. Bake for 9 minutes in an electric oven, or 10 to 11 minutes in a gas oven.
