- Mix sugar and cornstarch well to prevent lumps.
- Add 1 cup of sweet milk, stirring constantly until all lumps are dissolved.
- Add the remaining cup of sweet milk.
- Use a very heavy saucepan.
- Cook over moderately hot heat until the mixture begins to thicken.
- Add well beaten egg yolks and stir.
- Cook until the mixture thickens again.
- Remove from heat.
- Add butter, vanilla flavoring, and coconut. Mix well.
- Beat egg whites until peaks form. Add 4 tablespoons sugar and beat for 30 seconds.
- Spread the meringue on top of the pie.
- Bake until light brown.
