Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water (105~ to 115~F)
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 2 2/3 cups plain flour

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water.
  2. Add shortening, sugar, salt, and 2 cups of flour; blend well.
  3. Beat for 2 minutes, scraping the bowl occasionally.
  4. Stir in remaining flour until smooth.
  5. Scrape batter from sides of bowl.
  6. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 30 minutes.
  7. Stir the dough batter by beating 25 to 30 strokes.
  8. Spread evenly in a greased 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan.
  9. Pat the top with floured hands to shape and smooth.
  10. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 40 minutes.
  11. Heat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  12. Bake for 45 minutes or until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
  13. Brush the top with melted butter.
  14. Remove from pan and cool on a wire rack.
