Ingredients

  • 1 cup sweet milk
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 package yeast
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/3 cup shortening or salad oil

Instructions

  1. Scald the milk and add sugar and salt, stirring well. Cool to lukewarm.
  2. Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup lukewarm water.
  3. Add the dissolved yeast to the cooled milk mixture.
  4. Add flour gradually and beat until smooth.
  5. Add the beaten egg and shortening or salad oil.
  6. Add enough flour to make a stiff dough, about 2 1/2 cups.
  7. Knead on a floured board until the dough is satiny.
  8. Shape the dough into a ball and place in a greased bowl.
  9. Grease the top of the dough, cover, and refrigerate.
