Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp. shortening
  • 6 c. shredded red cabbage
  • sugar to taste
  • 2 c. apple slices
  • 1 c. minced onion
  • 1/3 c. white vinegar
  • 1 c. water
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 can cranberry sauce

Instructions

  1. Melt shortening in a heavy skillet.
  2. Add shredded red cabbage, apple slices, minced onion, white vinegar, water, salt, and cranberry sauce to the skillet.
  3. Cover and simmer for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally until the cabbage is tender and flavors meld.
  4. Serve as a delicious side dish with pork roast or other hearty mains.
