Ingredients

  • 4 red Italian onions, peeled and sliced
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup salad oil
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon cracked black pepper

Instructions

  1. Cover the sliced onions with cold water and let stand for 1 hour, changing the water every 15 minutes to remove the raw onion bite.
  2. Drain the onions thoroughly.
  3. Mix sugar, salad oil, vinegar, salt, and black pepper in a bowl or jar.
  4. Add the drained onions to the mixture and stir well.
  5. Put into a 2-quart covered dish or jar.
  6. Chill for at least 24 hours, stirring occasionally to ensure even marination.
